What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?
There are 4 Phases involved in Cardiac Rehabilitation though it is mostly the first 3 that patients become involved in unless patients are referred to Phase IV programmes.
Phase I: This is the 1st Phase of the process. This is when a person has been diagnosed with a Heart Condition such as Angina or Blood Pressure &/or needs to have treatment e.g. following Heart Attack may need Bypass surgery etc. The patient is treated within the hospital & is made stable before being passed on to Phase II.
Phase II: Once the patient has gone through Phase I the hospital will refer the patient to their local GP to continue the patient on the treatment process using medication, physical & psychological assessment & lifestyle advice in following check ups during the recovery process.
Phase III: Following a complete Health & Medical assessment patients may be referred to Phase III. Phase III consists of a full programme including Exercise usually within the hospital, Health & Lifestyle Education, Psychological & Occupational Counselling & more - tailored to meet the needs of the individual. Exercise classes are usually for 1 hour, 2 - 3 times a week for 10 weeks (may vary).
Phase IV: A referral from your GP or Hospital is needed to attend Phase IV classes. Phase IV classes are community based classes for patients to attend before moving on to take part in mainstream classes or gyms. Your instructor will have taken part & been tested on all areas of Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation. Classes can be circuit format or gym format.
